The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to draft quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the first round of the draft this year and now have finally signed their franchise quarterback.

While Kansas City Chiefs fans might not have been all that worried about the fact that rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes had yet to sign a contract, it was a concerning factor out there for those who closely follow the team.

Mahomes was one of six first rounders from this year’s draft who had yet to be inked to a deal by their NFL team. We all know that the Chiefs have had some financial issues this offseason (as evidenced by some big moves they’ve made), but now we can all celebrate! The Chiefs have signed Patrick Mahomes and all is good in Kansas City.

Mahomes, a rookie out of Texas Tech, more than likely will be sitting on the sidelines in year one, as Alex Smith will be the starter in 2017. While some believe Mahomes can win the backup job, I ultimately see Tyler Bray finally getting a shot to backup Smith.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes is going to be a project. He shouldn’t be thrown to the wolves at any point in 2017. If he is playing this season, I’ll assume that something has gone terribly wrong.

The Chiefs did not trade up to the tenth overall pick to hurl Mahomes into the deep end and hope something good comes from it. No, Andy Reid is going to work with the former Red Raider and develop him into the future franchise quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s an exciting time for Chiefs fans, as people my age had never seen the team draft a quarterback in the first round. When the Chiefs traded up to the tenth pick, I seriously was shaking because I had no idea what that feeling felt like.

Now that Patrick Mahomes is signed, the Chiefs have all of their drafted rookies signed, which is great considering camp starts next Friday. Now we’ll all just sit back and enjoy watching the young quarterback sling the football in training camp and know that he’ll be doing that in regular season NFL games before too long.

Sure the “Bench Smith! Put in Mahomes” chatter will begin as soon as Smith performs poorly, but the Chiefs should not listen to that talk. There’s no use damaging Mahomes this early on. He’s 21 years old and has plenty of time to grow into a legitimate NFL quarterback. Let’s not rush the process.
