Kansas City Chiefs Minicamp

Who Is The #1 Wide Receiver?

This will probably be one of the first questions on day one of minicamp for the Kansas City Chiefs. With the release of Jeremy Maclin, KC does not have a proven #1 wide receiver. However, the team appears to have already answered that question. It looks as though Tyreek Hill is going to get first crack at the top receiving job for the Chiefs this year.

Whether or not that works out remains to be seen. NFL analyst Cian Fahey drew the ire of many on Chiefs Twitter when he referred to Tyreek Hill as merely a gadget player. That has led to a number of people talking about the subject.

While I certainly agree that Hill is much more than a gadget player, I do feel the need to urge caution in proclaiming him ready to be the top outside threat for the Chiefs. There is a pretty big gap between what we saw from Hill in 2016 and the role he looks to take over in 2017. There are certainly no guarantees here.

However, I do think that Tyreek Hill is capable of giving the Chiefs a solid season in general. It may not live up to the standards that most have for a traditional #1 receiver. That’s not necessarily what KC needs though. The Chiefs offense is not built around the traditional expectations of an NFL offense. It relies much more on running backs and tight ends in the passing game.
