Every Royals first-round draft pick since 2000: Christian Colon (2010)

In 2010, Christian Colon became the fourth overall pick by the Kansas City Royals. At the time, it seemed like a bit of a stretch, as Colon never appeared to be anything more than a utility guy for whatever team he wound up with.

Colon debuted for the Royals in July of 2014 and wasn’t much of a regular-season contributor for the team. In fact, the same can be said for Colon’s entire Royals career. What Christian Colon will be remembered for by Royals fans will be his heroics during the two postseason runs the Royals made.

In the 2014 Wild Card Game, Colon singled in the 12th inning and eventually stole second base. Getting on second base was critical, as Salvador Perez had the walk-off single to get Colon home and give the Royals their first playoff win since 1985.

Colon represented the winning run in one of the biggest Royals playoff games in franchise history, but the heroics didn’t stop there. In Game 5 of the 2015 World Series, with no prior plate appearances to his name during the playoffs that year, Colon stepped up to the plate in the 12th inning and singled, giving the Royals the lead.

As we all know, the Royals would go on to win 7-2 and win their second World Series and Colon played a huge part in making that happen. He might not have been efficient during the regular season, but he was a part of two of the biggest moments in Kansas City Royals history.

Even when Christian Colon had a chance to win the starting second base job, he was still jilted by the organization. The Royals finally had no choice but to designate Colon for assignment in 2017. He was later claimed off waivers by the Marlins and spent time in their minor league system. As of this writing, he’s playing with the Kansas City Monarchs.

Despite never being a regular-season contributor, Christian Colon will be remembered by Royals fans forever due to what he did in the playoffs. He’ll never have to buy a drink in Kansas City ever again.
