The Kansas City Royals aren’t having a great season, but one of the biggest disappointments this year is the lack of offense from left fielder Alex Gordon. Gordon hasn’t had much production at the plate since signing his big contract.

When the 2015 season wrapped up, Kansas City Royals fans were on top of the world. Their team were World Series champions, taking down the New York Mets in just five games to claim the crown.

That World Series was a blast and one of the biggest moments came in Game 1 when Alex Gordon belted a home run into the fountains and tied the game at four runs a piece in the ninth inning. The Royals would go on to win that game in 14 innings.

That moment pretty much solidified that the KC Royals had to ink Alex Gordon to a new contract at season’s end. They just HAD to! Gordon was a first round pick by the Royals in 2005 and had been one of the few bright spots during some dark times.

The Kansas City Royals are at a dead end with Alex Gordon.

Yet when free agency began in Major League Baseball, a deal between Gordon and the Royals didn’t get done for a long time. With rumors that Gordo could land with the Cardinals or even the White Sox, Royals fans pleaded the Royals front office to re-sign the World Series hero.

The organization made every fan beam when they did indeed re-sign Alex Gordon. The deal, at four years for $72 million, is still the largest in franchise history and now it’s destroying the team, as Gordon just isn’t that same player that he was in 2015.

The Gordon deal wasn’t typically something that this organization did. They weren’t the type to re-sign players or ink big contracts in general. Gordon was 31 at the time and obviously his offensive production wasn’t going to go anywhere but down. Despite all of that, Royals Nation wanted Alex Gordon back in Kansas City.

Now, however, Gordon is a huge detriment to the lineup each and every day and the Kansas City Royals are stuck with him. They can’t send him to the minors because of the contract, no other team will want Gordon due to his poor performance at the plate, and even if they outright cut him loose, they’d still owe him all that dough.

The Royals also can’t merit benching Alex Gordon because he’s just making too much money. When the Royals started benching Omar Infante, he had about a year left on his deal. Alex Gordon has at least two full seasons left. Him being released isn’t going to happen.

Alex Gordon is pretty much an automatic out in the KC Royals’ lineup and that’s a problem.

Right now, Alex Gordon is pretty much an automatic out in the KC Royals’ lineup and that’s a problem. He’s slashing .175/.286/.206 in 46 games and 160 at bats with no home runs to his name. Even guys like Drew Butera, Cheslor Cuthbert, and Raul Mondesi Jr. have belted a deep ball this season. Yeah, Gordon is struggling big time.

At this point, the Kansas City Royals are at a dead end with Alex Gordon. He’s awful offensively and hasn’t done anything noteworthy at the plate since that big home run in the World Series, but he’s making too much money to just sit on the bench.

At least he’s good defensively, I guess.

It’s painful that this is the route things have gone between the Kansas City Royals and Alex Gordon. A once World Series hero has turned into a giant frustration for every Royals fan. We don’t want to feel this way about a player who the team once loved and adored, but sadly… Gordon’s legacy in Kansas City is slowly being tarnished as each game goes by.
