The KC Royals have one player leading their position for the 2017 All-Star Game held in Miami. That player is Salvador Perez and it’s not even close in the catchers voting.

We’re not far removed from the days when Kansas City Royals fans stuffed the ballot boxes for the All-Star Game and the team saw six starters after the first All-Star update in the American League. The Royals were a different team then, coming off a World Series appearance, and the team was dominating their opponents nearly every day.

Two years and one World Series title later, the Royals faithful isn’t at it as strongly this year. A lot of that is probably because the team is struggling and the other part is that no Royals, other than Salvador Perez, really deserve to represent the Kansas City Royals in the All-Star Game. At least not over some other players in the league.

The only other Royal to even place in their position voting was Eric Hosmer, who is fourth in the first base battle. He trails Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, Yonder Alonso of the Athletics, and Carlos Santana of the Indians.

The fans can only vote on position players with the pitchers being selected by the managers in charge of the All-Star Game. Jason Vargas is the only real likely candidate to make it to the big game though Kelvin Herrera and Joakim Soria have a realistic chance as well.

More from Kansas City Royals

The results aren’t surprising at all. None of the other Royals aside from Perez and Hosmer really have made a strong case to be playing in Miami in July (though I could see Mike Moustakas climbing up the third base ladder in the coming weeks). It’s just been that kind of season for the KC Royals.

If these results stick and Salvador Perez does punch his ticket to the All-Star Game, it’d be his fifth straight trip to the coveted event. Perez is easily the best catcher in the American League and potentially the best in all of baseball. He is a no brainer All-Star player, and since every team has to have at least one representative, Perez is the easy pick out of Kansas City.

While it’s nice to see deserving players getting the top votes, I do miss the days when Royals faithful almost got Omar Infante into the All-Star Game as the starting second baseman that year. Man, were those good times or what?
