There is a ton of talk about the Kansas City Royals trading off some of their top players. However, it may be wise to hold onto, and re-sign, Mike Moustakas.

As things continue to fall apart for the Kansas City Royals 2017 season, there is a lot of talk about the team selling off some of their core players. One of those core players who should get a lot of attention is third baseman Mike Moustakas. However, it’s my opinion that the Royals should look to re-sign Moustakas and build around him.

Despite their current struggles, the Royals do have some promising pieces for the future. Whit Merrifield and Jorge Bonifacio have both shown that they have potential as everyday contributors. Cather Salvador Perez is also under contract for several years. Adding Mike Moustakas to that group would provide a reliable power hitter to the mix.

Moustakas is currently tied for 7th in the American League in homeruns, and on pace for a 40+ homer season. The Royals have never had a player hit 40 homeruns in a single season. The current team record is held by Steve Balboni from 1985. The power that “Moose” is showing right now is something to build around.

At 28 years old, Mike Moustakas has a lot of good baseball ahead of him. With his power truly coming into form now, he’s got a lot of potential. However, Moustakas isn’t purely a power hitter. He is very familiar with the “small ball” style that the Royals used to gain success in 2014 and 2015.

Of course, you aren’t going to get a player of Mike Moustakas’s caliber to hang around for good feelings and memories. The Royals are going to have to be willing to pony up and offer Moustakas a good deal of money to stay around. He will have no shortage of suitors in the upcoming offseason.

There is especially some concern of him going to play for one of the southern California teams. Moustakas has not held back about his desire to end up with one of his hometown teams. The Los Angeles native could very well sign a deal with either the Dodgers or Angels, as both teams could use him.

That means the Royals will have to work extra hard to keep Mike Moustakas in house. It will not be a cheap contract, so KC General Manager Dayton Moore is going to have to convince the ownership that the investment is worthwhile.

The Kansas City Royals 2017 season appears to be falling apart around them. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t have some pieces to build around for the future. While trading off some players will make sense, they may need to keep a few players around. I believe that Mike Moustakas is one of those players.
