Alex Smith Trade Talk

Is Patrick Mahomes Even Ready?

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Apart from the trade market itself, there is one very big question facing the Kansas City Chiefs: Is Patrick Mahomes ready to take over yet? The big comparison everyone uses for Mahomes and Alex Smith is the Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre scenario in Green Bay years ago. However, many forget to include that Rodgers sat for three years.

It is a very real concern as to whether Patrick Mahomes will be ready by 2018. In fact, of all the concerns facing Mahomes as a draft prospect, his ability to transition to the NFL game was by far the biggest. It is very possible that the Chiefs got this pick wrong and the young gun-slinger won’t work out.

As it currently stands, Mahomes has yet to even claim the #2 job in Kansas City. The Chiefs, and almost every analyst out there, are telling us that he needs to develop. It simply is not a given that he will be ready to go in 2018. That means there is a very real chance that Alex Smith plays out his contract for the Chiefs.
