The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback position continues to be a hot topic for NFL pundits. Boomer Esiason says the Jets should go after Alex Smith.

Add Boomer Esiason to the list of people that seem to think the Kansas City Chiefs are moving on from Alex Smith. Understand that there is still no actual evidence to support the Chiefs wanting to move on. However, that isn’t going to stop the fans, pundits, and analysts from talking about it. Which means I’m going to have to keep covering it.

In a recent interview with NJ.com, Boomer Esiason lists Alex Smith as a veteran quarterback that the New York Jets should pursue. His logic is pretty sound…from the Jets side of things. Their new offensive coordinator, Johnny Morton, comes from a West Coast Offense background. That will be a difficult offense for young quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg to master. So, in the meantime, a veteran with experience in that offense makes a lot of sense.

However, it is from the Chiefs side of things where I am still not seeing it make sense. Connor Hughes of NJ.com repeatedly references a piece from Arrowhead Addict’s Matt Connor that talks about Tony Romo‘s list of desired destinations. However, nowhere has it been reported that the Chiefs are actually interested in Romo, or in moving on from Alex Smith.

Ok, But What If?

More from Kansas City Chiefs

If the Kansas City Chiefs are entertaining the idea of moving on from Alex Smith, an option like the Jets could pay off. Having taken the Chiefs to the playoffs in three of the last four years, and not finished a season worse than 9-7, Smith would have trade value. In fact, I would argue that it would not be unreasonable for the Chiefs to demand a first round pick for him.

Of course, many teams would balk at giving up a first round pick for Alex Smith. However, the Jets are not exactly in a position to be making big demands. They will have to pony up in any kind of trade for a quarterback. The Chiefs can certainly put them through the ringer on this.

However, I still do not believe that the Kansas City Chiefs have any real interest in moving on from Alex Smith right now. Despite many thinking they should pursue Tony Romo, I do not see it happening at all. Although, if the Chiefs did get that offer of a first round pick, that might give them some pause.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback position will continue to be a contentious issue for Chiefs Kingdom. Fans are desperate for a “franchise” quarterback who bombs the football all over the field. However, it looks to me like the Chiefs are fine with continuing with Alex Smith until a truly quality option presents itself. That is not Tony Romo.
