This was actually closer than I thought it would be. In a lot of ways, Alex Smith and Tyrod Taylor are very similar quarterbacks. Both are big on protecting the ball, and both are capable of making plays with their legs. It would not be a stretch to say the Kansas City Chiefs would be getting a younger version of Smith.
However, I have to take the side of familiarity and reliability on this one. While Tyrod Taylor could bring a spark to KC, there are a lot of unknowns for such a big investment (and at a time when other players need new contracts). While Alex Smith may not be lighting the league on fire, we do know what we are getting with him. That goes a long way with NFL front offices.

Tyrod Taylor may not even become an option for the Chiefs. The Bills may decide to stick with him. However, I would advocate KC taking a look if Taylor does get let go. I can’t say that I would be upset if John Dorsey and Andy Reid pulled the trigger on him. Tough decision in my book.

In all reality, Alex Smith is very likely to be the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. Everything we have heard from the Chiefs leadership points to that being the case. Furthermore, there really are not many options out there that could be categorized as “better” that Alex Smith. It may not be what Chiefs fans want to hear, but it’s going to be tough to find a better answer.
