Tim Melia – Goalkeeper
Sporting KC allowed the fourth fewest (42) goals in MLS in the 2016 season. You can’t overlook the importance of solid goalkeeping in that stat. Tim Melia has been good for Kansas City since arriving in 2015, though he is aided by a top tier defensive group. Melia has enjoyed some of his best years in MLS over the past two seasons.
With Sporting KC not being known for their goal scoring, it is of vital importance that the club be able to keep the other team in check. Tim Melia will be highlighted in that regard…and more than just because his uniform looks like a highlighter.
Sporting KC is looking to return to the top of the league, but that is going to require some transition in their approach. With Sporting undoubtedly trying to get more aggressive in scoring goals, they will need Melia and the defense to be on point. There will likely be counter-attack opportunities for opposing clubs. A good goalkeeper is a must.
