More from Kansas City Chiefs

There was a lot of angst regarding the Kansas City Chiefs starting cornerbacks. Of course we knew Marcus Peters would be fine, but there was a lot of question as to who the other starter would be. Fears were realized as Keivarae Russell was cut, Phillip Gaines struggled with his play and injuries, and DJ White was simply overwhelmed. How would the Chiefs fix this? With Terrance Mitchell…a guy who had bounced around the league in his early career.

Terrance Mitchell got his opportunity and immediately stepped up to the plate. Within his first few games as a starter, Mitchell made a number of big plays at key moments that helped secure some big wins for the Chiefs. This included breaking up passes intended for the likes of Amari Cooper and Demaryius Thomas.

Of course, the concern here is that Terrance Mitchell will eventually be figured out as Marcus Cooper once was. However, with a full offseason to work, there is also the chance that he will address any issues he knows of. One area Mitchell can improve in is his tackling ability as there were times that he lost a ball carrier. However, there is a lot to like about what he brings.

I still believe the Chiefs should add a cornerback from this draft class early on. In today’s NFL, I think you need three solid starting corners. Terrance Mitchell and Steven Nelson have shown some promise, but if the Chiefs want to contend, they need to be sure. However, keeping Mitchell on the roster should definitely be a priority for the front office.

The Kansas City Chiefs owe a lot of their success this year from the efforts of some unexpected players. There were a number of guys who truly stepped up and provided a boost to what was a decimated roster. Without those performances, we are probably looking at an 8-8 season. It is truly a benefit to know that the Chiefs have this kind of depth on their roster.
