The longest tenured coach with the Kansas City Chiefs is often one that isn’t talked about enough…linebackers coach Gary Gibbs. Along with Emmitt Thomas, Gibbs is one of just two holdovers from the Pioli era in Kansas City. That says a lot about what people think of him as a coach.
What might say even more about Gary Gibbs as a coach is how he has handled adversity in his linebackers corps. Gibbs has had to deal with injuries to starters Justin Houston, Dee Ford, Derrick Johnson, Josh Mauga, and Tamba Hali over the past few seasons. What has he done? Embraced the “next man up” philosophy with players like Ramik Wilson, Frank Zombo, and Justin March.
With all of the turnover that is happening with coaching staffs this offseason, I would not be surprised if someone snatched Gibbs to be a defensive coordinator. The potential jobs are just way too many. This is especially true if Dave Toub gets a head coaching gig somewhere. I don’t think he would hesitate to grab a familiar face to help guide the defense.
