Even after the Kansas City Chiefs took down the Oakland Raiders on Thursday Night Football, there are still fans out there that are skeptical of this 2016 Chiefs team.

Heading into this season, I had an inkling that this could be a special season for the KC Chiefs. They were coming off their best season in arguably 20 years and it just seemed like the end of the 2015 season was going to be the beginning of a remarkable journey in 2016.

On the other hand though, the “skeptic Chiefs fan” in me was lingering in the back of mind. As such, I only picked the Chiefs to go 9-7 on the year and lose out on the division title. I did have them making the playoffs though for what it’s worth.

While I get a lot of crap on here for being a negative Nancy when it comes to the Chiefs, I’m most definitely on board with this team potentially making a Super Bowl. This is the most excited I’ve been about a Chiefs team in a long time, folks.

This is a special season we’re witnessing in Kansas City and this team is very much a Super Bowl contender.

They make big plays, they play good defense, and they do enough to win games. That’s a Super Bowl caliber team.

I’m on board with the 2016 KC Chiefs, but I can promise you that there are still a boat load of fans out there who used to have the same skepticism that I did. A lot of that skepticism comes from this franchise letting the fans down time and time again.

For one, the Kansas City Chiefs went 22 years without winning a playoff game. Before January of this year, the last time the Chiefs had won a playoff game was when Joe Montana and Marcus Allen were still playing offense in Kansas City.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

All throughout the 1990s, the Kansas City Chiefs had “Super Bowl caliber” tendencies, but always choked early in the playoffs. It was one heartbreak after another, and it’s left a sour taste in the mouths of fans.

Even in the 2013 Wild Card game when the Chiefs had 38-10 lead heading into the half, they still managed to lose. It really did seem like the Chiefs were one of those cursed franchises, never meant to make it to the Super Bowl.

I guess my point of this article is to tell those skeptics to let your guard down and enjoy what we’re witnessing this year. In years past, I’m sure the Chiefs would have found ways to blow several of the games that were won this season, but this is a new team that’s ready for the next step.

The Chiefs of old used to crumble under any type of pressure, whether it be playoff pressure or just a big game in the regular season. They haven’t done that yet this season. Sure, there have been bad games, but all teams have those.

While I try not to compare the Chiefs and the Royals too much in my articles, Royals broadcaster Denny Matthews said after an Alex Gordon walk-off home run during the 2014 season, “If this is your year, these are the games you win.” That year, of course, saw the Royals sweep their way to their first World Series in 29 years.

That quote has rang true throughout the 2016 Chiefs season, as game after game, someone comes up with a big play and makes a win happen. This is a special season we’re witnessing in Kansas City and this team is very much a Super Bowl contender.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Are you buying into these 2016 Chiefs or are you still skeptical?
