Royals Rumors: Cubs to Potentially Trade Jorge Soler for Wade Davis
Royals rumors are still going late into the night and it appears that the Kansas City Royals and Chicago Cubs are close to nearing a deal. It involves Royals closer Wade Davis and Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler.
Since the hot stove began, it appeared that the Kansas City Royals would be parting ways with Wade Davis via a trade with another team. The Cubs emerged as the main landing spot on Monday evening, and now it seems that a deal could get done within the next day.
The Royals would send All-Star closer Wade Davis to Chicago in exchange for outfielder Jorge Soler and hopefully some prospects as well.
Ken Rosenthal tweeted the news on Tuesday evening.
While Soler would provide some need for the Royals due to lack of outfield talent (and even more so with Jarrod Dyson potentially being traded as well), the Royals would probably need more than just him for this deal to take place. Though it is worth noting that Davis has had injuries this past season, so that could dampen the deal a bit.
When the original news broke about the Cubs showing interest in Davis, I mentioned some Cubs prospects I wouldn’t mind seeing in a Royals uniform in the future. Those guys were Bailey Clark, Ian Happ, and Jose Rosario.
While we’re all anxiously awaiting the news on Twitter of an official deal being announced, Jeff Passan tweeted that a deal is unlikely going to get done on Tuesday night.
While Royals fans love Wade Davis and what he’s provided this team in the bullpen and in the closer role, the team is not going to make the same mistake they made with Joakim Soria in 2011. They held onto him when teams wanted him and then his production declined shortly after. Kansas City won’t want to make that mistake again.
Wade Davis provides a team with a shutdown closer for at least one season. The Royals have Kelvin Herrera waiting in the wings to take over the closer role, a role in which he fared quite nicely in last season, so this trade makes perfect sense for Kansas City.
Jorge Soler, on the other hand, didn’t have a great season offensively for the World Champion Cubs, but he provides a veteran presence in the outfield. He slashed .238/.333/.436 in 86 games. He also hit 12 home runs.

If it’s just player-for-player, then the Cubs would win this trade in 2017. Soler, however, is signed through 2020, which bodes well for the Royals down the stretch.
What do you think, Royals fans? Are these Royals rumors making you angry or are you excited to see what Dayton Moore has up his sleeve?
