Royals rumors are on fire and a team is officially going after Kansas City Royals closer Wade Davis. That team is the Chicago Cubs and they’re serious about wanting to add Davis to their roster.

The Kansas City Royals appear to be open to selling off some of their stars and the most recent is Wade Davis. The Chicago Cubs are interested in trading for Davis, and it appears very unlikely as the hours pass that Davis will still be a Royal within the next few days.

Jon Morosi tweeted on Monday that the Cubs were inquiring about Davis and it’s not crazy to see why. Chicago, who are coming off their first World Series title in 108 years, acquired Aroldis Chapman during the deadline this past season.

Chapman helped guide the Cubs to their championship, but the rest of their bullpen struggled in the postseason. With Mark Melancon off the board and Chapman demanding big bucks, Davis is an affordable option for a team looking to contend in 2017.

It’s been a crazy day as far as Royals rumors go with names like Lorenzo Cain, Davis, Danny Duffy, and Jarrod Dyson floating around to be traded. The Royals were thought to be contenders heading into this offseason, but perhaps the new CBA has affected the way the Royals planned to handle their crop of free agents after this season.

That could be leading to all of these potential trades, but it does appear likely that Davis will be wearing another team’s jersey next season.

Davis has been clutch ever since the Royals put him in the bullpen. He came to Kansas City after the 2012 season along with James Shields and originally was a starter. The bullpen is where Davis flourished though with a 1.00 ERA in 2014, a 0.94 ERA in 2015, and a 1.87 ERA last season.

The reason why Davis being traded is a good idea is because he showed signs of slowing down last season. He had two stints on the disabled list and definitely wasn’t the Wade Davis of old.

With Davis’ affordability, he’s very appealing to other teams. He’s still got probably one or two years left of effective closing ability and it’s no wonder that the Cubs, fresh off their World Series title, are looking to add Davis.

Kelvin Herrera did well in Davis’ absence last season as a closer, so the Royals would still be okay in that role. The rest of their bullpen needs some help, but if the team can get some solid prospects for Davis, then they should absolutely make a deal.

Some names that the KC Royals could ask about are Bailey Clark, Ian Happ, and Jose Rosario. These are all minor leaguers who just might be ready to come up and help a major league team, and if the Royals are going to sell their dominant closer, they’ll be getting some great prospects in return.

Remember how much the Cubs gave up for Chapman for a few months? Just imagine what they’ll surrender for an entire season with a player.

Even though it’ll be sad to see Wade Davis closing out games for other teams, the Kansas City Royals are making the right decision with this one.
