KC Chiefs: John Dorsey Has Done Well in Draft After All
2013 NFL DRAFT – Dorsey’s First Season
The KC Chiefs brought John Dorsey in during the 2013 offseason, making him the man in charge for the 2013 NFL Draft. What a job to step into too, as the Chiefs would have the first overall pick for the first time in their 50 year existence.
Leave it to the Chiefs to get the first overall pick in a draft where there were no quarterbacks worthy of taking that early.
With the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Eric Fisher. Fisher was an offensive tackle out of Central Michigan, and was the first offensive lineman to be taken first overall since Jake Long in 2008.
Leave it to the Chiefs to get the first overall pick in a draft where there were no quarterbacks worthy of taking that early. Not only that, but the 2013 draft is considered as one of the worst drafts ever.
Considering all of that, Dorsey did pretty well. Fisher certainly wasn’t a sexy pick, but four seasons and one extension later, he’s proven himself and he’s still on the team.
The Chiefs had no second round pick that year due to trading for Alex Smith, but they had two third round selections, and both of those guys are still on the team as well.
Travis Kelce has proven to be an absolute steal in the draft. He’s a top-tier tight end and the team just extended him earlier this year. He even had his own dating show!
Overall, that draft wasn’t the most impressive for Dorsey, but his first two picks were pretty good considering what other guys were available in that draft.
Knile Davis was the other third round pick. A few weeks ago, I wouldn’t have been able to say that he was still with the team, as he had been traded to the Packers. Green Bay then cut Davis after a few weeks and he briefly spent time with the Jets before coming back to Kansas City.
Davis has been disappointing, but he found his way back here, so maybe it’s meant to be.
Those three guys are the only ones still on the Chiefs roster from the 2013 NFL Draft. The next five picks wouldn’t last more than two seasons in Kansas City. They were Nico Johnson, Sanders Commings, Eric Kush, Braden Wilson, and Mike Catapano.
Overall, that draft wasn’t the most impressive for Dorsey, but his first two picks were pretty good considering what other guys were available in that draft. Definitely give the guy props for not going quarterback that year because otherwise we would have had four years of Geno Smith or EJ Manuel, and NO THANK YOU on that.
