Kansas City Chiefs: Rumors Circulating About A Change At Quarterback
By Ben Almquist
A Draft Pick
If you have been following my Kansas City Chiefs first round big boards, then you know that I think this year is prime for the Chiefs to go for a first round quarterback. The truth is that this team has very few actual holes on the roster. With some extra comp picks to work with, the Chiefs should be in excellent position to move up and grab a passer if they want to.
There are two bonuses here. The first is that Chiefs fans will stop bemoaning the lack of a first round quarterback selected by the franchise. The second is that this is one of the most surefire ways to be able to afford a new passer. Also, the Chiefs would likely only make a play for a guy they believe in. So who would be in play?
Mitch Trubisky – North Carolina

My top pick for the Chiefs is UNC signal caller Mitch Trubisky. Just a one-year starter for the Tar Heels, I have seen a lot to like about Trubisky’s game. He is a prototypical pocket passer with a strong arm and quality accuracy. He moves well and has solid mechanics. Unlike most college passers, Trubisky also comes from a system that requires him to make reads and adjustments.
The only real drawback here is that Mitch Trubisky has very little experience compared to most prospects. However, even that is largely mitigated due to the level of competition he’s faced. Of all the quarterbacks in this draft class, I’m highest on Trubisky and think he’s worth trading up for.
Brad Kaaya – Miami
At the start of the year, I had Miami’s Brad Kaaya highlighted as a quality option for the Chiefs in the draft. Kaaya is an experienced starter with good measurables and quality athleticism. He has a decent arm and stands tall in the pocket. Like Trubisky, Brad Kaaya is generally tasked with making calls and adjustments on his own which is rare in college quarterbacks.
Brad Kaaya hasn’t had quite the season I hoped to see from him this year. However, that is due in large part (if not entirely) to one of the worst offensive lines in college football. Kaaya has developed a tendency to throw off his back foot, which hurts his velocity, distance, and accuracy. Again, that is due largely to a bad offensive line. Fortunately, it is also correctable. The Chiefs likely wouldn’t have to move far to have a shot at Kaaya.
DeShone Kizer – Notre Dame
The KC Chiefs like the fact that Alex Smith is capable of making plays happen with his legs. If they want someone similar in that regard, Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer might be the best option. Kizer isn’t a “running quarterback” though. He has shown himself to be a tough guy in the pocket, and possesses a quality arm. He has shown the ability to make calls and adjustments as well.
The biggest mark against DeShone Kizer is that he doesn’t make complex reads and adjustments as often as a team would like. However, there are a number of scouts who think that falls more on coach Brian Kelly than it does on Kizer. I have seen film showing Kizer pointing out coverages and blitzes, so he know how to do it. This would be an intriguing pick for Andy Reid and John Dorsey.

If the Chiefs decide to go after a quarterback in the draft, then we may see another season of Alex Smith at the helm. Equally probable would be that the Chiefs utilize Nick Foles for a season. Either way, I don’t see them just handing the reigns over to a rookie. Fortunately, there are a lot of angles to pursue here.

If the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make a change at quarterback, then 2017 certainly does seem like the right time to do it. There are a number of options that should be available to pursue. Of course, the Chiefs will have plenty of competition regardless of who they target. It may end up being a case where Alex Smith simply is the best option again.
