The Kansas City Chiefs scored an ugly win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.  The Chiefs looked like the beat up team they are, but still came out on top.

Coming into today, the Kansas City Chiefs were considered one of the hottest teams in the NFL.  The Chiefs hadn’t lost since their BYE week, shutting down three of the best offenses in the league.  On the other side of the ball, the Jaguars have been a complete mess in recent weeks.  Many felt this would be a blowout…not quite.

The Kansas City Chiefs are certainly a better team than the Jacksonville Jaguars.  However, injuries had left the Chiefs short-handed at both quarterback and running back.  On top of that, the Chiefs were down starting left guard Parker Ehinger.  Then, during the game, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was forced to leave with a groin injury.  Needless to say, the offense struggled.

With Nick Foles at the helm, there was clearly a complete loss of timing between the quarterback and everyone around him.  The offensive line seemed unsure of protections and snap counts.  The receivers and Foles were completely off their marks.  This isn’t uncommon when a backup quarterback comes in, but more was expected of Foles.

Defense Saves The Day

On defense, the Chiefs played “bend but don’t break” football.  With almost no offensive support, you really can’t say enough about the effort Bob Sutton’s group gave.

The Chiefs constantly harassed Blake Bortles and forced four turnovers, plus a pair of fourth down stops.  Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t put the game away until late.

Short of scoring themselves, there really wasn’t much more the defense could have done.  There were certainly some mistakes made throughout the game.  However, given the offense’s inability to even move the ball, the defense stepped up very well.

Reality TV Meets NFL Sunday

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has embraced the spotlight that surrounds him.  The emerging star is a big personality on the field.  Enough so that he got his own reality dating show.  However, many Chiefs fans weren’t expecting that persona to come through the way it did in this game.  That has led to some very mixed feelings on what happened.

In the fourth quarter, Travis Kelce went for a pass in the endzone when he was grabbed by his collar (while in mid air) and wrenched to the ground.  The play, which appeared pretty blatant on television, didn’t draw any kind of a flag from the official.  An irate Kelce proceeded to argue the non-call.  That’s when things got weird.

As Travis Kelce walked away from the official, he kept yelling at him.  Finally the ref either had enough or heard something he didn’t like and threw the flag on Kelce.  Clearly angered that he would be flagged for this, Kelce took his towel and threw it at the official!!  That, of course, earned a second flag and a subsequent ejection.  Chiefs Kingdom was pretty split on it’s reaction.

The Kansas City Chiefs are 6-2 and headed to take on another struggling team this week in the Carolina Panthers.  It will be interesting to see what kind of team KC puts together this week.  Hopefully the Chiefs are much healthier.  Otherwise, it will be tough to grab a win on the road.
