The Kansas City Chiefs survived a scare at home against the New Orleans Saints holding on to victory, 27-21. The Chiefs looked good most of the game but there are still things to work on moving forward.

The KC Chiefs are in a supposed “light stretch” of games. The next three games for the Chiefs are against the Colts, Jaguars and Panthers. Those three teams combined have won five games coming into Sunday. That’s not very good.

Kansas City is coming off a huge road win against the Oakland Raiders. The team improved to 3-2 heading into the Saints game. Before this game, the Chiefs hadn’t won back-to-back games this season.

Drew Brees exposed the Chiefs’ defensive struggles by attacking the young cornerbacks not named Marcus Peters. A guy that played pretty badly for most of the game was Steven Nelson. He got beat by the rookie wide receiver, Michael Thomas, most of the afternoon.

The good news for the Chiefs is their offense came on in the first half. Kansas City scored 21 first half points. Not all the points came on offense.

Safety, Daniel Sorenson, must have eaten his Wheaties today. Sorenson picked off a Brees pass and ran it back for a touchdown. He also added a few key tackles (six total) and a sack in the game. His pick six became the difference maker.

The Kansas City Chiefs scored a couple of nice offensive touchdowns in the first half. Alex Smith threw a dime to the speedster, Tyreek Hill, for an awesome one-handed catch in the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown catch.

Running back, Spencer Ware, got in on the action as well. He hauled in a short pass from Smith and ran it the rest of the way for a 46-yard reception for a score. The Chiefs had a 21-7 lead at halftime.

The Saints made it interesting in the final moment of the game with a late touchdown pass to Brandon Coleman on a missed coverage assignment by Frank Zombo cutting the lead to three points for the Chiefs, 24-21.

The Chiefs tried to run out the clock but Tyreek Hill ran out of bounds with over two minutes remaining in the game. Thankfully for Hill and all of Kansas City, an unnecessary roughness call was made on the Saints’ Nick Fairley, extending the drive for the Chiefs.

The bone-headed play helped the Kansas City Chiefs milk the clock all the way down to 28 seconds remaining after a close field goal conversion by Cairo Santos.

  2. How is Phillip Gaines feeling? We need him
  3. Man Drew Brees is pretty good

Looking Ahead For The Chiefs

The men in red and yellow head to Indianapolis to take on the Colts lead by Andrew Luck. It’s the day before Halloween so anything could be seen in Indiana that day. Let’s hope it involves another Chiefs’ road victory.

The Colts offense should be “easier” to handle than the Saints offense. Yet being on the road makes things a little bit different. Hopefully, Phillip Gaines is healthy enough to play next weekend. The Chiefs need him against guys like T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief.
