The Kansas City Royals called up more guys today. Will these guys help the Royals this month?

The AAA Omaha Storm Chasers season ended today meaning more guys could be called up to the big leagues. Infield specialist, Christian Colon, is the biggest name of the three call-ups. He got sent down a few days ago to make room for the first-tier of September call-ups.

In 19 games at Omaha this season, Colon slashed .273/.333/.377 for the Storm Chasers. He added five doubles, a home run, two stolen bases and six walks for the AAA team.

However, Colon has struggled quite a bit this season in the big leagues. In 47 games, he’s slashed .228/.295/.268 for the Kansas City Royals. He’s accumulated ten walks, ten runs batted in and five doubles for the Royals this year.

Colon will add depth to the infield but don’t expect to see him play too often for the Royals this September. The Kansas City Royals are fighting for a wild card playoff berth. The team is only four games out of the second slot with 24 games left. Of the 24 games, 16 are against teams with records under .500.

The KC Royals added two other players today as well. Outfielder, Daniel Nava and pitcher Kevin McCarthy got the nod.

The KC Royals traded for Daniel Nava a few weeks ago for the Los Angeles Angels. Nava played in 45 games for the Angels this season. He slashed .235/.309/.303 this year in the big leagues. He acquired five doubles, one home run and 13 RBIs. He struck out a rather high 26 times for the LA team.

Nava’s best season came three years ago as a member of the Boston Red Sox. In 2013 he slashed .303/.385/.445 in 134 games for the Sox. He amassed 12 home runs, 29 doubles and 51 walks three seasons ago. The KC Royals can hope they get a player in the middle of where Nava has played this season and in 2013. He’s more a depth guy similar to Jonny Gomes last season.

Much needed pitching depth is on the way to the Royals as well. Right handed pitcher, Kevin McCarthy will be in the bullpen tonight. McCarthy is 6’3″ tall and 200 lbs. The big man held a 2.97 earned run average for the Storm Chasers this season.

McCarthy struck out 30 and walked 16 for Omaha in 33 1/3 innings pitched for a 1.88 strikeout to walk ratio. He’s not the most exciting pitcher to be called-up but he shouldn’t be used much anyway. He’s more of an emergency pitcher in case of a long extra innings games occur or he could be used in blow out games.

Unfortunately, to make room for these three players on the 40-man roster, the Kansas City Royals had to designate for assignment a couple of players today.

Day one right fielder, Reymond Fuentes, as well as in season acquisition pitcher, Nick Tepesch, get the ax.

Fuentes played well in his short time as a Kansas City Royal. He slashed .317/.364/.341 in 13 games for the Royals this season. He smacked 13 hits for the big league club.

Unfortunately, Fuentes’ numbers went way down in Omaha. He slashed .254/.325/.317 for the Storm Chasers in 65 games this season. He acquired 61 hits and 12 extra base hits for Omaha. The 25-year-old battled a few injuries this season hurting his development severely.

Nick Tepesch didn’t last long in the KC Royals organization. The 27-year-old born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri had a 3.94 ERA with AAA Omaha in 16 innings pitched since being acquired off waivers in mid-July.

Tepesch struggled with command at Omaha striking out eight and walking seven batters. The numbers just weren’t good enough for him to stay on the 40-man roster and were the reason for his release.

Of these three players, Colon should see the most playing time. I don’t expect him to see a ton however. This guys are for depth purposes only. Don’t expect any of these guys to be the savior of the Kansas City Royals 2016 season. Let’s hope they bring energy to a club house that needs it right now.
