Kansas City Chiefs Top Position Battles – Number Nine: Punt Returner

The punt return options might be even better than at kick return.  The Chiefs return units should be dangerous this year.  This is the right reason to have position competition.  That’s good news considering we still don’t know much about the situation with De’Anthony Thomas.  No matter how this plays out, Chiefs fans should be feeling pretty good about whoever is back shagging punts.

a.      Tyreek Hill – He’s been getting the first looks in offseason practices, but this will be a tight competition.

b.      DeAnthony Thomas – Thomas has done nothing to lose this job.  However, he’ll need to be able to show he can be an asset in other areas.

c.      Keivare Russell – Excellent short area quickness is what you look for in a punt returner.  Russell has it.

d.      Albert Wilson (watch out for) – Wilson has experience fielding punts.  Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the top backup option.

e.      Jeremy Maclin (not likely) – He CAN do it…and do it well.  But you don’t send your #1 wide receiver back to field punts.
