Chiefs on the Cusp of Greatness – Number 5: Alex Smith

This one will probably upset a lot of people, but hey, it’s my article, and I like Alex Smith, so here he is!

Smith was a bit of a bust for the San Francisco 49ers after they drafted him number one overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. He had a nice year in 2011 though, which revived his career, and he’s been on fire ever since.

I put Smith on this list because he’s already given Kansas City something they hadn’t had in nearly a decade – A reliable quarterback.

The Chiefs got their hands on Smith during the 2013 offseason and since coming to Kansas City, Smith has gone 30-16 as a starter. He’s completed 918 passes out of 1,442 attempts for 10,064 yards. Smith has tossed 61 touchdowns to only 20 interceptions, and has also been a threat with his legs, rushing for 1,183 yards and four touchdowns.

Smith might not be the most popular guy in Kansas City, but he’s one of the most reliable. He doesn’t turn the ball over and he makes smart decisions. It’s these reasons why Smith has already propelled himself into the “Greatest Chiefs Quarterbacks Ever” discussion.

Hell, if I had to rank the Chiefs quarterbacks right now, Smith would probably be third or fourth all-time. He knows how to win and he’s a leader on the football field.

I put Smith on this list because he’s already given Kansas City something they hadn’t had in nearly a decade – A reliable quarterback. We know Smith is suiting up for the Chiefs every week and we know he’s going to give it his all and not complain if things don’t go his way.

Some might want to trade for Brock Osweiler or another young gun in the NFL, but I’m good with Alex Smith.
