Whit Merrifield

Whit Merrifield earned a lot of fans this Spring when he slashed .347/.389/.653, but he was passed over in favor of Reymond Fuentes who was already on the 40-man roster.

Merrifield is another player that the Royals would have to make concessions to get onto the squad. His versatility may make him worth it.

More from Kansas City Royals

Merrifield is batting .286 this year and just hit another home run last night. He’s got two on the season, but isnt’ a big power guy.

He does offer the ability to play anywhere on the infield or in the outfield. He could turn into a right-handed only version of Ben Zobrist for the Royals to a lesser extent.

Merrifield also offers some speed on the base paths and could be used as a pinch running specialist who won’t look lost in the batter’s box if it comes to that.

He’s got 16 steals on the year and hasn’t been caught so far this season. In his Minor League career, he has 138 stolen bases but has been caught 51 times.

He’s also performed for his team in high pressure situations in the past. He had a walk-off hit for the South Carolina Game Cocks during his college days. It came in the College World Series.
