Edinson Volquez Vs Mike Pelfrey
This match-up features two pitchers that the opposing batters have seen a lot of. Not only have they been exposed to the opposing hitters, they’ve hat their hats turned sideways by all of the hits whizzing by.
The Royals have seven batters with at least ten at-bats against Mike Pelfrey that have a .300 or better batting average. Lorenzo Cain is 7-14 with four two-baggers and four runs driven in.

Moustakas and Hosmer each have four hits. Hosmer has four walks to his credit and Moose has a homer with four RBIs. Infante is 17-41 against Pelfrey but only has one extra base hit. Current Royals’ hitters bat .367 against Pelfrey. In six starts against the Royals, he’s 1-2 with 5.34 ERA.
While that would appear to be good news for the Royals, Edinson Volquez has worse numbers against the Tigers than Pelfrey does against the Royals.
In seven career starts against the Tigers, Volquez has a 6.21 ERA and a 1-4 record. He was 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in four starts just last season. This one could get ugly in a hurry for both sides (daily fantasy baseball stacking dream teams).
Justin Upton owns Volquez. He’s 8-17 with four doubles, five runs scores, and four RBIs. Anthony Gose also hits well off of Volquez as he’s 5-11 with a home run. Overall, the Tigers’ hitters are batting .324 off of Volquez.
It would be nice to see the Royals break out the bats against the Tigers. They’ve been slumping a bit to start the year.
In regards to the start of the year, Pelfrey has a 6.52 ERA over his first two starts. He’s gone a total of 9.2 innings with 13 hits and seven walks allowed.
Volquez on the other hand, has a 2.04 ERA to start the season through three starts. He’s pitched 17.2 innings on the year and has two quality starts. He’s also struck out 17 batters but has walked seven hitters.
