Wilmington Blue Rocks: 0-3

The Blue Rocks got off to a rough start when they started the season on a three-game losing streak. Pitchers Zach Lovvorn, Josh Staumont, and Mark McCoy took the losses for the Blue Rocks and may have been glad that the other game got postponed due to weather.

Josh Staumont, the Royals’ 18th ranked prospect, only gave up one earned run in 2.2 innings of work but his error allowed the winning run to score. He was able to strikeout seven batters in less than three innings but also walked four. He’s got strikeout stuff but needs to hone his control.

Pedro Fernandez, the Royals’ 21st ranked prospect, and Derek Gordon, brother of Alex Gordon, also pitched well for the Blue Rocks.

Fernandez pitched 4.1 innings and gave up four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. He only allowed one run to score in his start. Gordon only pitched 2.2 innings but only allowed two hits and no walks. One of his hits happened to be a home run but he still managed three strikeouts.

The blue rocks bats were mostly cold from top to bottom with a team batting average of .215. Ryan O’Hearn, the Royals’ 13th ranked prospect, and Chad Johnson were the only two Blue Rocks’ hitters to bat .300 or better.

O’Hearn was 5-13 with a double during the three game stretch. It was the Blue Rocks only extra-base hit in the series. Chad Johnson was 4-10 at the plate but struck out six times also.
