Round 1 – Pick 28: Reggie Ragland, Inside Linebacker (Alabama)

The Chiefs have a whole host of players who can play inside linebacker and it seems like it may not make much sense to take  Reggie Ragland.

While his path to playing time appears to sit behind the likes of an aging Derrick Johnson, Josh Mauga, Ramik Wilson, and D.J. Alexander he’s a hard hitter who shouldn’t be passed up if he’s still available.

In his last two seasons at Alabama, Ragland has recorded 195 total tackles with some ability to get to the passer also. He has four sacks in that time to go along with three forced fumbles and three recoveries. He’s also been able to defend ten passes.

Reggie Ragland Combine Results

  • 40 Yard Dash: 4.72 seconds
  • Vertical Jump: 31.5
  • Broad Jump: 116.0 inches
  • 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.28 seconds

Ragland wasn’t a top performed at his position in any of the categories he competed in at the NFL combine. There are some concerns about his speed, but if the Chiefs are looking for a run stuffing defender who can spell Johnson from time to time, this could be the guy.

Here’s what NFL.com has to say about Ragland:

"Thumping inside linebacker with throwback size and tonesetting mentality. Ragland is a confident and capable early starter in league who has the temperament to become one of the premier run-stopping inside linebackers in the pro game. Ragland has some coverage and speed limitations, but his instincts and overall awareness should be able to mask those issues."

The Chiefs are probably already set at this position and have enough quality depth to get by, but Ragland would be a nice player to have for years to come.
