Sean Smith

It’s obvious that Sean Smith is on his way out of Kansas City. He’s an incredible talent at the cornerback position and deserves to be paid as such.

The Chiefs got Smith for a hell of a price in 2013 when they signed him to a three-year deal. He outperformed his contract and will now get to reap the benefits of that.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Smith has been linked with the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and even the Philadelphia Eagles. It really wouldn’t be surprising if Smith chose to go to division rival Oakland, as he’s from that area, and the Raiders have the money to pay for him.

The Chiefs really only could have kept Smith in Kansas City had they franchise tagged him, but they chose to tag Berry instead. Considering Kansas City drafted Phillip Gaines in 2014 and Marcus Peters in 2015, the writing seemed to be on the wall regarding Smith’s future here.

Terez Paylor reported that Smith was already getting attention on Tuesday, and this isn’t surprising. He played extremely well in 2015, despite missing three games due to a suspension. He had 40 tackles, 12 defended passes, and two interceptions and basically had whatever receiver he was covering on “Smith Island”.

I mentioned last week that Smith was likely on his way out of Kansas City and I just don’t see any scenario in which he returns to the Chiefs in 2016. I really hope I’m wrong though.
