KC Royals: Spring Training Overreactions From Game Two
By Scott Dillon
Three: Volquez gets pulled in second inning. Bullpen is going to be overworked again this year.
While it’s unclear exactly who Edison Volquez is, Edinson Volquez also couldn’t complete the second inning. It’s a good thing the Royals have all that bullpen depth, because they’re going to need them.
Even though Volquez threw 34 pitches, he pitched pretty well for Spring Training. He doesn’t do well in Spring Training historically, so he may actually have a leg up on years past.
His fastball was touching 94 miles per hour and he got two of his five outs via strikeout. It looks like his stuff is working just fine.
It’s obvious that fans have a soft spot for Volquez and it’s absolutely deserved:
Volquez has a real shot at being the staff ace again this year. That isn’t what he signed up for last season, but wound up starting game one of the World Series for the Royals.
He also now has back to back seasons of success so it would appear his inconsistencies are over. Look for Volquez to be one of the Royals’ most effective pitchers and help the bullpen out the most.
