Kansas City Royals All-Time Loss Leaders – Number 2: Mark Gubicza (135 Losses)

Mark Gubicza may best be known in Kansas City for rocking a mullet better than anyone in the league. Okay, he was a pretty good pitcher at times also.

Gubicza is the last 20 win pitcher for the Kansas City Royals. That accomplishment came all the way back in 1988. The Royals are now without a 20 game winner for longer than they’ve been without a World Series (It’s a good trade-off).

Gubicza is third on the all-time list of wins for Royals’ pitchers. It’s a great example of what spending an entire career on a team can do.

Gubicza was a member of the 1985 Royals and won a game during the ALCS but made no appearances during the World Series.

1988 was his best season for the Royals when he went 20-8 with a 2.70 ERA and earned an All-Star nomination. He’d follow up with an All-Star nod in 1989 also though his stats weren’t quite as good (They weren’t bad either).

In the 2014 ALDS, Gubicza was quoted in an article by Jeffrey Flanagan for FoxSports.com:

"Even Angels manager Mike Scioscia has been curious about Gubicza’s loyalties. “He walked up to me before the game Thursday and said, ‘Hey, you are rooting for us, right?'” Gubicza said. “I just said, ‘Sure, skip.'”"

That quote alone really summarizes ‘Forever Royal’. It was obviously hard for the Angels’ analyst to figure out who to cheer for. The Royals made it easy on him and only drug it out for three games.
