Royals Rumors: Is Carlos Gonzalez on the Move
By Scott Dillon
Carlos Gonzalez
Carlos Gonzalez is the big piece to move for the Rockies. He’s the big contract the Rockies are probably looking to move and could retrieve the most trade compensation.
First of all, Gonzalez’s numbers are much more incredible at home than on the road. If you’re beginning to notice a trend here, you’re right…all of these players have first names that start with the letter ‘C’. (But seriously, they’re home/road splits are terrible)

‘Cargo’, as he’s nicknamed in Colorado, has his fair share of unwanted cargo. He has an injury history that has seen him hurt for an extended period of time in nearly every season. Even last year when he played most of the season, he spent time dealing with a nagging knee injury from the year before. He finally came to life in the second half last year crushing 27 of his 40 home runs. He’s also a below average defender in the outfield, and while he can make the diving catch from time to time, he gives up his share of defensive runs.
Gonzalez is so appealing due to his power potential and his moderately low strikeout rate. His 2015 slash line of .271/.325/.540 was much better in the second half hitting .285/.337/.638. The problem here again is his home/road splits. Gonzalez slashed only .243/.294./.464 away from Colorado, although he still managed to hit 16 home runs.
Gonzalez comes with two years remaining on his contract which would have him departing at the same time as most of the Royals core if this trade were to take place. He’d also likely demand the biggest return which could completely sap the Royals’ farm system. His inability to stay healthy is a big gamble for a two year rental especially given the likely cost.
