KC Royals: Dayton Moore Reclamation Projects
By Scott Dillon
Jonathan Sanchez: Miss
Jonathan Sanchez was as close to a big swing and miss as will appear on this list. Dayton Moore traded Melky Cabrera to the Giants for Sanchez and Ryan Verdugo , likely looking to capture some of the brilliance the Sanchez flashed during the 2010 season.

In 2010, Jonathan Sanchez pitched to a 3.07 ERA across 33 starts. He earned 13 wins and started 33 games for the Giants that year. That was really the only year that Sanchez did anything spectacular. He never carried a sub 4.00 ERA in any other season of his Career.
Sanchez was an immediate bust for the Royals in 2012. He went 1-6 across 12 starts and pitched to an ugly 7.76 ERA. He also walked 7.4 batters per nine innings. He actually walked more people than he struck out.
The Giants went on to win the World Series that year. I’m not saying that Cabrerra is the reason they won a World Series. It had more to do with it being an even numbered year. (Maybe Sanchez would have prevented them winning?)
If there is anything that gives Dayton Moore some grace here, it is that he managed to turn Sanchez into Guthrie. At the time it was two failed ‘reclamation projects’ changing scenery, but it may have been the second time that trading Jonathan Sanchez away, sparked a World Series run.
