Today is a good day in Royals Rumors for the KC Royals and their fans as news broke early this morning that Alex Gordon was staying in Kansas City.

By re-signing with the Kansas City Royals,  Alex Gordon has cemented his place in Royals history as a legend.

Gordon now has the opportunity to finish out his career as a Royal.

Sam Mellinger, a sports columnist for the KC Star tweets:

Sam’s absolutely right.

Alex Gordon reclaims his role as ‘face of the franchise’ by re-signing with the Kansas City Royals. He’ll never put up the gaudy numbers that George Brett did, but the Royals don’t need him to and neither do the fans.

Is there really anything not to like about Alex Gordon? He’s a silent leader, the hardest worker on the team, and plays a gritty style of baseball. He’s a model for those prospects called upon when the core group breaks up to mold themselves after.

Personally, I am ecstatic about it. Gordon is my favorite player. When news broke last week that the Royals had ‘no chance’ of re-signing Gordon everything seemed a little darker.

There was even more cause to be salty when reports broke that the White Sox were strongly pursuing Alex. Let that sink in for a minute. There was a chance, at least hypothetically, that Alex Gordon could have played AGAINST the Royals 18 times next season.

The internal conflict as a fan on whether to love him or loathe him would have been almost too much to handle. Thankfully, that’s a reality we don’t have to realize.

Alex Gordon may not retire a Royal, but this contract mean he’s a career Royal. No matter what happens at the end of the four years, Alex Gordon will always be remembered as a Royal. Players being ‘lifers’ are a rare sight in the current baseball world.

Appreciate it for what it is while it last, because we’re witnessing live a little Royals history.
