KC Chiefs: Could Christian Hackenberg Be Next Franchise Quarterback
Do The Chiefs Need A Quarterback?
Given the play of Alex Smith this year, it is safe to say that quarterback is not an immediate need. Smith has solidified himself as the Chiefs starter.
While he has limitations (arm strength), he will more than likely be the best quarterback the Chiefs have through at least next season. Still, Smith is not getting any younger and the Chiefs will likely be forced to part with proven backup Chase Daniel this offseason due to salary cap concerns.
Murray is not tall player, and he does not possess a particularly strong arm. He likely has the potential to be a Chase Daniel type player if everything works out.
So what do the Chiefs have in Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray? Two question marks.
Aaron Murray is likely the favorite to be the Chiefs backup going into next season. He’s smart, moves decently well in the pocket, and seems to be grasping the offense. He seemed to really be coming on towards the end of the preseason too.
There are reasons he fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft though. Murray is not tall player, and he does not possess a particularly strong arm. He likely has the potential to be a Chase Daniel type player if everything works out.
That may mean he has a long NFL career, but probably will prevent him from developing into a starter. Murray lacks elite physical tools, and does not have the elite accuracy to make up for it. Murray is a fine developmental prospect, but not a reason to avoid taking a quarterback.
