The Ugly: Play Calling

It’s hard to pinpoint any area as “ugly” when the Chiefs finally knocked off Denver and FINALLY knocked off Manning. But, alas, something has to be ugly in the good, bad, and ugly segments, and I decided on the play calling.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

In a game where the Broncos didn’t have Aqib Talib, their best cornerback, I was disappointed to still see so many screen passes and short passes and nothing challenging the Denver secondary. I get that Alex Smith isn’t a deep passing type of guy, but come on. Make an effort.

If Smith could have pulled a Manning from the past and found a cornerback or safety to pick on all game long, the Chiefs could have made this a good ol’ fashioned blowout. Instead, the Chiefs went with their typical dump the ball off and run strategy.

This is just the type of strategy the Chiefs have carried since Smith joined the team in 2013. He’s not a “throw the ball deep” kind of quarterback. Where Smith helps out is that he doesn’t lose you games, but sometimes you just have to be better and have to take risks. The Chiefs could have put this game away early had Smith been able to help his offense punch the ball into the end zone one more time at least.

Again, it’s tough to say anything was ugly in a 29-13 victory and in a game where you knocked out the team’s starting quarterback, but I wish Andy Reid would take a chance with Smith and let him possibly make a mistake. This would have been the perfect game to chance it too, as Talib was out and the Chiefs had a good lead.

I’ll take a victory though.
