Offense

Just to make it easy on you, here’s the team’s (un)official depth chart. But there is more to the squad than who will be lining up for the first snaps on either side of the ball.

First off let’s start with the easy part. Jamaal Charles is your running back ladies and gentlemen. He makes it easy, because I don’t have to write much else. He’s good, he’ll get the bulk of the carries and he’ll probably score at least once.

Backup Knile Davis is more than serviceable, but don’t expect more than four or five carries for the third-year man.

Chiefs fans are no doubt excited to see new addition Jeremy Maclin lead an improved group of receivers, but all eyes will still be on the most polarizing man in Kansas City since Hal McRae — quarterback Alex Smith.

  • The former Pro Bowler has rabid fans in KC as well as those who think Chase Daniel would be the better option — I’m not kidding.

His numbers in KC are not All-Pro (6,578 yards; 62.9 completion percentage; 41 touchdowns; 13 interceptions), but they aren’t awful either. Couple it with an 18-12 win-loss record (he only played 15 games each the past two seasons), and he’s hardly been the reason KC still has yet to win a playoff game for the first time since 1994.

Much of his success could depend on an offensive line that’s a lot like the second season of “House of Cards.” There’s not a ton to like, but it’s certainly no worse than the previous year’s version.

It will feature tackles Donald Stephenson and Eric Fisher (who we will touch on later), guards Ben Grubbs and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, and center Mitch Morse. More than anything, KC fans will most likely be happy Mike McGlynn was not listed in the previous sentence.

It’s a make-shift line for sure form the former Pro-Bowler in Grubbs, to the rookie Morse. Look for Paul Fanaika, Zach Fulton and Jeff Allen all to see playing time as well.

As for third-year tight end Travis Kelce, let’s just say as long as he’s healthy, expect him to earn his first trip to Hawaii and the Pro Bowl this year.
