Did I confuse you on this one?

Look, I’ll come right out and say it. I think Alex Smith is simply an above average quarterback.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Sure, he’s a game manager, but I wouldn’t consider him a big playmaker. He’s smart with the ball and has great awareness, but he wouldn’t be my first choice if I was playing a pick-up game.

Last year wasn’t a stellar year for him by any means, but he did fairly well for what he had to work with. I think 2015 will be a much better season, now that he actually has some receivers to throw to. That should be a big focus for both Smith and the Chiefs in training camp, and we should start to see him develop some relationships with the receivers.

Smith will be in the second year of the four year extension that he signed in August 2014. Smith is now guaranteed his 2015 and 2016 salaries totaling $26 million.

If Smith expects to be on the team past 2016, the Chiefs will need him to start working on downfield passes more frequently, especially with the addition of Jeremy Maclin. While having a game manager is great, having a playmaker is usually better.
