Royals VS Tigers: April 30th at Kauffman Stadium (Royals won 8-1)
Last season, the Detroit Tigers had the Kansas City Royals’ number and it was frustrating. Time after time, the Tigers would always shut the Royals down and make it seem as if “Okay, you’re cute, but you can stop trying now.”
The Tigers exited the postseason early last year when their bullpen blew games for them against the Orioles. Obviously we all know that the Royals did quite well in the playoffs. Still though, headed into 2015, the Tigers still seemed like the team to beat in the American League Central. They had won the division for the past four seasons and beefed up their roster during the off season.
That’s why when April 30th’s match up between the Royals and Tigers neared, fans were anxious. Could the Royals finally prove they were the team to beat in the division?

Well, as we all know, the Royals did just that that evening at the K. Danny Duffy was starting on the mound for the Royals and his offense took control of the game early on. Scoring three in the third inning and five more runs in the fifth against Tigers starter Alfredo Simon, the Royals were up 8-0 in a game that fans weren’t super confident in beforehand.
Danny Duffy pitched one of his best games, lasting seven innings and only allowing one run. That one earned run wasn’t allowed until the eighth inning and Duffy was pulled shortly after. The Royals went on to win that game by a final score of 8-1.
While it wasn’t the most intense game, it sent a message to the Tigers: “We won’t let you beat up on us this year. We’re the defending American League champions and WE’RE the team to beat in the central”.
Since then, the Tigers have surprisingly faded into the background of the division race and are currently eight games back of the Royals. Sure, Detroit could still make a push at overtaking the division, but it’s been nice to finally prove the Kansas City Royals can beat them.
