Kansas City Royals: Free Agent Signings In 2015

Alex Rios was yet another risky signing for Dayton Moore and the Royals. While a talented outfielder during his MLB years, Rios saw a bit of a decline in his strength due to a staph infection that put him in the hospital. This was after his second season with the Toronto Blue Jays (Link courtesy of Chicago Tribune).

The Royals didn’t feel Jarrod Dyson was ready for the permanent right field spot and had to sign someone else, as last season’s right fielder Nori Aoki departed for San Francisco. In came Rios on a one-year and what I could imagine to be a “prove it” type of deal due to the injury he had while with the Rangers that cut his 2014 season short.
Rios was off to a hot start in Kansas City. He smashed a home run in his Royals premiere and also had three hits (and three RBIs at that). The hot streak continued and Rios had a .321 batting average before having to spend some time on the disabled list due to getting hit by a pitch on his hand in the second week of the season.
Rios hasn’t looked quite the same since his return from the DL. As of June 21st, Rios is batting .236 with the lone home run on opening day, eight runs, three doubles, and only nine RBIs batted in. It’s unlikely that he’ll remain in Kansas City past this season, but hopefully he’ll be apart of something special in 2015 with the KC Royals.
