Bo Jackson’s best play’s as a Kansas City Royal player: 10. Bo Breaks His Bat

There are lots of guys who pull this stunt today, usually over their knee. Bo Jackson was the icon who made breaking his bat a thing.

Many of the players who pull off this feat don’t even know where it comes from. Back when Bo Jackson started doing it, you still had players that didn’t lift weights because they feared becoming “muscle-bound” and “stiff” which would hurt their ability to hit the ball.

Reggie Jackson, who was a football player in college at Arizona State, was an early proponent of weight training in baseball, as well as California Angels catcher Brian Downing. Yet, still many held to the old school belief.

Thus, when Bo Jackson started breaking bats in frustration after striking out, well, it was a remarkable feat. It’s not just that Bo Jackson could break a bat. He did it so easily. Bo Jackson broke his bat like a regular person snapped a toothpick.

He was a different kind of baseball player.

Just look at the video. In an era where baseball players tended to wear snug uniforms, he bulged with muscle like no one else. He looked like a man playing with grade-schoolers. Even steroid guys like Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire didn’t have Bo’s powerful base.
