KC Chiefs: Is Chase Daniel Ready to Be a Starter in the NFL

Chase Daniel did his part on Sunday afternoon by helping lead the KC Chiefs to victory at Arrowhead Stadium. Daniel has only started two games in his six year NFL career, but he has looked pretty dang good in both of those starts, which begs the question… Is Chase Daniel ready to be a starter in the NFL?

Looking around the league, there are several teams that are looking for a new starting quarterback. Depending on who drafts a quarterback or picks up other free agents, those teams at this exact moment are Houston, Tampa Bay, Tennessee, St. Louis, Cleveland, and Chicago. Tampa Bay and Tennessee have the two first picks in the draft and will likely take quarterbacks. St. Louis might still try to roll with Sam Bradford, but with all of his injury problems over the years, I could see Bradford going elsewhere.

Going back to Chase though, he’s started two games in his career (both for the Kansas City Chiefs) and has thrown for over 350 yards in those two games and no interceptions. That’s pretty impressive, but both games came in the final game of the season. Chase’s 2013 start had no pressure to it whatsoever, as he was starting to give Alex Smith a week of rest for the playoffs. This year’s game had more pressure and Chase did his part, but I still don’t know if this means he’s ready to start for another team.

I would not, however, be surprised if a team gave Chase Daniel the, as I like to call it, “Matt Cassel Treatment”. Matt Cassel came in for Tom Brady in the 2008 season, played well, and then went on to sign with Kansas City the next year. Similar deals have happened with Matt Flynn and Kevin Kolb, both who started a few games, looked good, and then got signed to enormous deals for other teams and not really live up to the hype.

I would hate to see that same fate happen for Chase. I’d love to see him stay in Kansas City, but with the strong need for the quarterback position, would a team like Houston make some sort of trade for Chase Daniel?

I honestly don’t think Chase Daniel is ready for a starting position. He’s played well in two games, but that’s just it. He hasn’t had enough experience to prove to me that he’s ready for that pressure week after week. He’s proven that he’s a good backup and good backup quarterbacks are hard to find sometimes.

It’s worth noting that if the Chiefs part ways with Chase this offseason, they will save $2,050,000 in dead money and then would have Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray to rely on as Smith’s backups (Source of link: Sportrac).
