Today is Christmas. Among the gifts under your tree, KC Royals fans also have presents from general manager Dayton Moore. In the spirit of the season, let’s call him Dayton Claus.
For KC Royals fans, winter off-season acquisitions ARE Christmas gifts.
These new players give us hope that next season might be better than last, and help fire our imagination during those cold winter nights when we don’t have baseball.

Of course, all Christmas gifts are not created equal. Us fans have some pretty definite ideas about which new players will play both greater, and lesser roles, in 2015—pretty much entirely based on their track records.
This winter, the KC Royals remained relatively quiet through the early going, only to make a flurry of moves after the Winter Meetings in San Diego the 2nd week of December.
This off-season, in fact, bears a striking resemblance to a well-known Christmas Carol:
‘Twas the Night before Christmas and all through the farm
Not a prospect is stirring, not even an arm…
Looking at the Royals system, those free-agent moves seemed necessary because there doesn’t appear to be anyone on the farm ready for a big role in Kansas City.
However, our expectations could be seriously skewed compared to what actually happens in the upcoming season.
Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at what Dayton Claus has brought us this year:
