Kansas City Chiefs: What to Improve On For Week 16
Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
The Kansas City Chiefs won their first game since mid November and everyone is excited about that. Kansas City controls their own destiny to get into the postseason, which means they absolutely have to win their last two games.
The Chiefs really didn’t have a lot of bad aspects in this game against Oakland, but I made it a point to write these Improvements posts every week so I’ve found a few areas that I can nitpick about. First though, let’s go over what I suggested for this last game.
Last week I mentioned that the Chiefs needed to improve on the offensive line, run defense, forcing turnovers, and giving Jamaal Charles the ball. The offensive line underwent some changes last week with the benching of Mike McGlynn (FINALLY). That was only 15 weeks late.
McGlynn was replaced with Jeff Linkenbach, who hasn’t been known to be a great lineman in the past. The main memory that comes to mind of Linkenbach is when he was completely steamrolled over when he was with the Colts. A Chargers defensive lineman practically pushed him right into Peyton Manning in that game (so did Linkenbach technically get the sack?).

Alex Smith was only sacked once in the game and as a result, was able to heave balls down the field more. He completed his longest pass of the season when he threw a 47 yard beauty to rookie Albert Wilson.
The run defense had their best showing in weeks, which is surprising considering how well the Raiders ran the ball against them in week 12. For some reason, the Raiders offensive coordinator decided to have Derek Carr throw the ball 56 total times despite knowing how bad the Chiefs run defense is. As a result, Oakland only ran the ball 17 times for 78 yards.
The Chiefs still haven’t been able to intercept a ball in a looooong time, but recovered a fumble. Derek Carr mishandled a snap and Frank Zombo jumped right on top of the loose football. Hooray for the Chiefs getting turnovers!
Jamaal Charles only had 52 yards on 12 carries, but I think he might have been limited due to his injury the week before. Knile Davis filled in nicely with two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving).
