Game Notes Versus Georgetown Hoyas

The Hoyas are 5-2 thus far, including a win against the Florida Gators, and losses to the second ranked Wisconsin Badgers, and the Butler Bulldogs. Junior guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera leads Georgetown in scoring with 14.4 points a game, and in assists with 3.3. Kansas does not want to put him on the line, as he has nailed 25 of his 28 free throws (89.3%).

Senior center Joshua Smith is the second leading scoring, dropping in 12.7 points a game, and pulls down 6.9 rebounds. Mikael Hopkins also adds 6.9 rebounds.

Perry Ellis continues to lead the Jayhawks in scoring and rebounding, tossing in 14.6 points and grabbing 6.7 rebounds. Frank Mason III tallies 10.1 points and 3.4 assists, while freshman Cliff Alexander contributes 10 points and 6.6 rebounds an outing.

Jamari Traylor will make the trip to D.C., but the Jayhawks will be without reserve forward on the court. Traylor was arrested early Sunday morning for interfering with the duties of a police officer. Bill Self commented briefly on suspending Traylor for a game, according to KUSports.com.

"“Jamari and I have talked. I’m going to hold him out of the game. He’s going to travel with us. Hopefully it’ll be a situation where we can put it behind us, even though he’s still got some legal obligations ahead of him,” coach Bill Self said Monday."

Traylor is averaging 19 minutes a game, so Perry Ellis, Cliff Alexander, and Landen Lucas will need to fill the void Traylor’s absence will leave in the rotation. These three will need to stay our of foul trouble. Self still has Hunter Mickelson on the bench, but Mickelson has just 13 minutes of playing time this season.

Kansas launched a 17-point second half comeback on Friday at home against the Florida Gators, but the Jayhawks must be ready to play at the opening tip-off. They won’t be able to count on a rabid home crowd to spur a turnaround if they play poorly in the first half against Georgetown.

The Jayhawks continue to search for an acceptable level of consistency on both ends of the court. They played immeasurably better defense after the intermission against the Gators, and hopefully, that will continue going forward. It was the first time this season, this unit has played defense at the level fans and the head coach expect.

This young Kansas Jayhawks basketball team is still growing, but this tough, true road game, their first of the year, will be a huge test for Kansas. Hopefully, we’ll see more improvement from the Jayhawks.
