THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS JAYHAWKS

Let’s make no bones about it. Kansas is probably going to struggle in this one, just to remain competitive. Baylor averages 49 points a game, good for second in the the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks are dead last in scoring, with only 16.6 points an outing.

Baylor’s defense ranks fourth in the conference, giving up just 23 points per game, while Kansas is 7th, allowing 28 points.  (stats courtesy of the Big 12 page)

The Jayhawks will have to make some plays on both sides of the ball if they want to be in this past the first quarter. It might just get ugly quick.

Ben Heeney has been a beast on defense for the Kansas Jayhawks. The senior linebacker from Hutchinson, Kansas leads the conference with 84 tackles, averaging 12 a game.

Heeney is all over the field, zeroing in on whatever opposing player has the ball. He is the Jayhawks’ biggest play maker on the defensive side of the ball. He is an impressive college football player, and it is always fun to watch him work.

Heeney will have to have another stellar day for Kansas to even have a chance at staying in it. Maybe he can make some big, game changing plays Saturday.

Sometimes, the difference between winning or losing just comes down to making plays when the opportunities present themselves.

Two weeks ago, Kansas lost by 13 to Texas Tech. In the first quarter, KU had a long, perfectly thrown pass dropped that may have gone for a touchdown if it had been caught. At the very least, the Jayhawks would have been in scoring position. Instead, Kansas ended up punting.

On the very next series of downs, on defense, KU had an interception delivered right to them, and it was also dropped. The Red Raiders went on to score a touchdown.

Who knows how the game would have played out if Kansas had made those two huge plays, but maybe the outcome would have been altered.

The Kansas players MUST make plays. They have to come through when given a chance. They will have a hard time being competitive if they can’t execute when they have the chance to change the game.
