THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS JAYHAWKS

The defense for the Kansas Jayhawks has been scrappy all season long. In all but maybe the Duke loss, this defense has played competitively in every game. The offense has not been efficient, has struggled to score, or even maintain possession.

Texas Tech, despite their 4 losses, average 30.8 points an outing. Kansas must maintain the defensive intensity, work strive to keep the score low. They have to find a way to keep their team in the game, and maybe come up with a big play or two late.

If the Jayhawks had a better offense, the Kansas defense might be one of the better units in the Big 12 Conference. It’s so hard to tell when so much pressure is put on them each game, They have so little room for error. Fans should be proud of their efforts.

The Red Raiders allow the most points of any team in the conference at 39.5 (Kansas is 7th at 27.0) per game. They are also last in the Big 12 in run defense, surrendering  257.5 yards a game on the ground.

The Jayhawks average 155 yards a game on the ground. They need to look to run the ball more consistently, and not worry so much about the passing game in this particular match up.

It is no secret the Jayhawks struggle through the air. Their team Pass Efficiency is 99.8, by far the worst mark in the conference. They don’t pass well.

It should be a simple game plan this week. Run the football, give your defense some rest, and run the football some more!

This may be Kansas’ only real chance to win a road game this season in the Big 12. The Jayhawks actually had a chance to win last week against a much better Oklahoma State Cowboys team at home, but a special teams break down late cost them the opportunity.

Kansas must keep this game close with good defense, and ball control on offense, and perform better on special teams. The Red Raiders are beatable, but the Jayhawks must do the few things they do well in this one.

Interim Head Coach Clint Bowen has this team playing better but the question of whether or not he can get them over the hump far enough to win a game or two remains. Maybe it can answered positively on Saturday.
