THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS JAYHAWKS

The Kansas Jayhawks are only scoring 15 points a game. Fifteen points! That is an embarrassing total. Of course, not even all of those points are scored by the offense.

KU does nothing great on offense. They are decent with the running game, gaining 167.8 rushing yards a game, good for 6th in the Big 12 Conference. They are abysmal in the passing game, putting up just 154.6 yards a game, dead last in the Big 12 by a long way.

Kansas may want to put the game more into the hands of Corey Avery, DeAndre Mann, and find more ways to get the ball to Tony Pierson, arguably the Jayhawks best offensive weapon. Maybe a commitment to the run is what this offense needs to loosen up the receivers on the outside.

(stats from big12sports.com)

Michael Cummings, Montell Cozart, whoever – is it going to matter? Neither is a strong passer. It doesn’t look as if the Jayhawks are going to have a good passing game regardless of who starts at quarterback.

If the Jayhawks are going to make any progress in the passing game, this week would be a good place to start. The Cowboys give up 263.2 yards a game through the air, ninth in the conference.

The Cowboys may be as vulnerable to the pass as any team Kansas plays, but the Jayhawks passing game looks grounded, despite their upgrades of talent on the outside.

Cummings looks to be the more instinctual quarterback, if not the less talented. If Kansas is going to run more, go with Cummings. If they are going to continue to try to pass the ball, go with Cozart, and hope he eventually learns to hit a target.

All right, who are we fooling? Kansas has no chance to beat at a top 25, or top 50, or maybe even a top 100, team right now.

Their defense is at least competitive, but the offense struggles to sustain drives, and their punter continues to bang balls into the endzone instead of aiming for a corner on occasion.

It’s pretty bad when the most interesting part of the game is seeing what the uniforms will look like.

It is sad to be in this mental state, but – IT’S BASKETBALL SEASON!!!
