THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS JAYHAWKS
As unlikely as it may seem, Clint Bowen is now in charge of the Kansas Jayhawks, at least temporarily. Bowen, a Lawrence native, has certainly put his time in as a player, and a coach.
Bowen cut his teeth as a Special Teams coach for years, and served as the dismissed Charlie Weis’ Defensive Coordinator. The defense has been a bright spot for this up and down squad.
We shall see if Bowen can coax some consistency out of an uneven offense. Let’s see if the change in coaches can bring about an improvement of play on the field.
This seems like a broken record, but quarterback play has been even more important to the Jayhawks than most teams. In Kansas’ two wins, Cozart has passed the ball really well; in their two losses, he has been awful.
If Bowen sticks with Montell Cozart, the new coach has to find a way to get some steady play from his signal caller. If Cozart continues to struggle, Charlie Weis’ biggest legacy will be his inability to find anyone who could play quarterback. It might be anyway.
If Cozart is to keep his job, he HAS to play better. When he has been bad, he has been really bad. There have been flashes of talent, but nothing in which you can count on for the future success of a football team. Let’s see if Bowen can get the light to come on for Cozart.
Will last season’s defeat at the hands of the Jayhawks in Lawrence be on the minds of the Mountaineers. The win was Kansas’ first in Big 12 Conference play in 27 games.
Could West Virginia have a little bit of revenge in their hearts. No team likes to have a streak like that broken against them. The mountaineers may not need the extra motivation, but it may just offset any excitement on the Jayhawks’ due to the coaching change.
Maybe the Jayhawks can use the extra emotion from the fiery new coach to catch the Mountaineers off guard. Maybe West Virginia can account for two straight Big 12 wins for the Kansas Jayhawks.
