I know it sounds crazy, but after the Kansas City Royals won their 2nd straight extra-inning playoff game by defeating the heavily-favored Angels 3-2 in Anaheim Thursday night, the Royals are taking on the look of a team favored by destiny. Mike Moustakas made sure of that with his game-winning 11th inning home run.

The signs started this winter and have continued throughout this magical season that has snapped a 29-year playoff curse. In November, then 17-year old singing sensation Lorde confessed to VH1 that a 1976 picture of George Brett from National Geographic had inspired her to write the international smash hit “Royals”. What makes the whole thing crazy is that Lorde is from New Zealand.

The Royals marketing department decided to paraphrase Lorde’s world-wide smash hit when they picked their 2014 slogan of “Be Royal”. On April 15, Lorde met George Brett.
In June, the Royals surged from 7 games out to take the A.L. Central lead with a 10-game winning streak, which was their longest in 20 years. It also put Kansas City in first place as late as June for the first time in 11 years.
Also in June, relievers Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis started scoreless inning streaks that would extend over 30 innings and last until mid-September.
