THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

The New England Patriots have allowed the fewest passing yards in the NFL, according to ESPN. The Chiefs are ranked 26th the the league in passing yards.

Kansas City needs to find a way to get the ball into the hands of their wide receivers. Screen passes are all fine and dandy, but at some point, defenses are going to find a way to stop them. They can’t make up the bulk of the passing game.

Alex Smith has to find a way to get the ball down field. The running game is going to be the bread and butter, but the Chiefs can’t allow defenses to just focus on the run.

It may be tough going in the passing game against the Patriots this week.

Surprisingly, the Chiefs have been better against the pass than the run thus far. Kansas City ranks 22nd against the run, and 10th against the pass. If the Chiefs can improve their run defense, while maintaining the adequate pass defense, they can beat the the Patriots. Tom Brady is still really good, but the surrounding cast may not be as good as in years past.

James-Michael Johnson and Josh Mauga have been solid thus far at middle line backer, and that has really helped make up for the losses of Derrick Johnson and Joe Mayes.

The Chiefs are 2nd in the NFL with 11 sacks. If the Chiefs can stifle the run, there will be more opportunities for Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, and Dontari  Poe to make plays in the pass rush.

It looks like the Chiefs are going to get their best player back after Jamaal Charles missed most of the last two games with a high ankle sprain. Knile Davis and Joe McKnight filled in nicely for the hobbled Charles but they just don’t have the big play skills that Charles does.

It will be interesting to see if Charles is able to make the cuts on that ankle at full speed. It is a great luxury to have good players to give him a rest if he needs a few plays off.

He just adds another dimension to the Chiefs offense. He has to be accounted for every single down. The Chiefs offense should be better with him in the game. Just his presence should give the receivers a tiny bit more space, as defenders have to be aware of the threat Charles brings to the field.
