Kansas City Chiefs: There’s Still A Chance (Video)
The Kansas City Chiefs are fresh off a hard fought loss to division rival the Denver Broncos and are 0-2 on the season.
While history tells us there is only an 11% chance that the Chiefs make the playoffs, I’m here to say that there is still a chance. Call me Mr. Optimist if you want but for arguments sake, just hear me out.
The Chiefs are on the road this week against the Miami Dolphins in what could be their first win of the season. While Miami did put up an impressive performance against the Patriots in week one, they answered with just as bad of a performance against the Buffalo Bills in week two.
Miami gave up 29 points to a fired up Bills team while their offense only mustered 10 points on the day. The Dolphins also surrendered four sacks and lost their best running back, Knowshown Moreno to an elbow injury that is said to be more serious than previous thought.
Point is, if the Chiefs play like they did last week (fire and fight in particular) they could find themselves with their first win moving them to 1-2 on the season.
The following week, they come home against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. You have to know that Arrowhead will be rocking and the Chiefs should be fired up to get this win.
Personally, I think they should wear the red-on-red uniforms for this one. Going “Flamed Up” could add that necessary motivation the team needs to grab this win. The Patriots have struggled to protect Brady this season and you can just picture Tamba Hali and Justin Houston having field days.
So hypothetically, the Chiefs win their next two games and are at 2-2, going on the road to take on a 49’ers team that’s struggling as well.
Protecting a 20-7 lead well into the second half on Sunday night, the 9’ers blew it and gave up 28 points eventually losing to the Chicago Bears. Kaepernick blew it when the pressure was on him to make a play and you know Alex Smith is hungry to beat his former team.
Kansas City could steal this win, making it a three game winning streak headed into the bye.
Following week 6, the Chiefs travel to San Diego where I just don’t see them winning. It’s so hard to predict divisional games, as these are two teams that know each other really well. If there is anything we learned from last season it’s that, you should hold onto your butts when KC faces San Diego.
I just have a hard time seeing the Chiefs getting this win.
So lets say they’re 3-3 at the bye week (wishful thinking I know) with the home stretch of their schedule to follow. Here’s how the schedule plays out following the bye week,
- St. Louis Rams
- New York Jets
- @ Buffalo Bills
- Seattle Seahawks
- @ Oakland Raiders
- Denver Broncos
- @ Arizona Cardinals
- Oakland Raiders
- @Pittsburgh Steelers
- San Diego Chargers
So assuming they lose to the Bills, Cardinals, Seahawks and Steelers down the stretch, that would put the Chiefs at 9-7 in my hypothetical situation.
Not only would 9-7 exceed expectations for a team that has been so depleted with injuries, it could potentially set them up in a position for the playoffs. Now, obviously a lot of things would have to go right for this to happen but doesn’t this season feel a lot like that 2o11 season?

You know, where the Chiefs started 0-4 before rattling off four straight wins all the way into a tie for first place in the AFC West? The division is definitely more tough now than then, just because of Peyton Manning but, the Chiefs might still have a fighting chance in this thing.
Deep down I know I’m the ultimate optimist but I urge to you that there is a lot of football left to be played and while the Chiefs have been snake bitten with injuries in 2014, this season is not over yet.
Like that scene in Dumb And Dumber when Lloyd Christmas is told that his odds are at 1-in-1,000,000..
“So you’re saying there’s a chance….”
